Once again Alex Zerphy, Student Advisor to the Terrapin Institute, appealed to the Governor's Office to recognise this special day. Each year since 2000, terrapin enthusiasts celebrate May 13 as the beginning of terrapin season. By marking this day as Diamondback Terrapin Day we hope to raise awareness of all turtle species and ask the public to watch out for turtles crossing roads, searching for nest sites, and nesting.
If you observe a turtle trying to cross the road and it is safe to stop, please put the turtle on the other side of the road in the same direction it was traveling.
